First annual Food Day OCT. 24 to shake up how NYC teens think about food

Celebrity chefs, food samples, and more help point students, teachers toward better nutrition.

NEW YORK, NY – October 19, 2011 -
FoodFight, a NYC-based nonprofit revolutionizing the way students and teachers think about food, will mark the first annual Food Day with two exciting events. FoodFight kicks off the Food Day celebration at Food Day’s flagship event, “Eat Real Eat In” in Times Square. Between 10:30 AM and 3:30 PM, New Yorkers can stop by to learn about the local food movement and break bread with celebrity chefs.

At 4 PM, the FoodFight team will move to the High School for Hospitality Management (located at 525 West 50th St) for a second Food Day event featuring demonstrations and tastings by FoodFight's own celebrity Chef Woods. Chef Woods is an Emmy Award-nominated T.V. host, celebrity chef and author of cookbooks, Home Plate Cooking and The New Low Country. He was chosen as the first chef to kick off Michelle Obama's “Let's Move” cooking series to help busy families create nutritious and affordable meals, and has been regularly featured in O Magazine, Food & Wine, Southern Living and more. FoodFight will offer smoothies and healthy recipes from its sponsor Vitamix, and tasty snack treats from Lucy’s Whey, Food Should Taste Good, PopChips and Hint Water.

Representatives from NY Compost will be providing information and demonstrations about exciting new school- and residential-based composting programs. In addition, staff from Red Rabbit, a company that provides healthy breakfast, lunch and snack options to schools, will have samples from their regular lunch menu available for tasting. Students from FoodFight classrooms will be manning tables to illustrate and share lessons gleaned from the cutting-edge FoodFight curriculum. In celebrating Food Day, New Yorkers are invited to join the FoodFight and start reclaiming the city’s food system.
