Teachers College Columbia University
The nation’s oldest and largest graduate school of education, TC is the pre-eminent institution in the field of education. Since it was founded in 1909, the Program in Nutrition has been the leader in integrating the findings of nutrition science, nutrition education and public health. We are lucky to count them as a partner in helping us to develop evaluation metrics for FoodFight’s evidence-based programming and for hosting our teacher training workshops.
Spearheaded by Dr. Tracy L Breen, a full time faculty member in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Bone Diseases at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. She is a lead investigator on several clinical trials looking at novel treatments of diabetes. FoodFight is working with Dr. Breen and Mt. Sinai School of Medicine to develop a training program to prepare medical students to use nutrition as part of their medical intervention with adolescent patients. Mt. Sinai Doctors have been delivering education modules in FoodFight classrooms that focus on the physiological effects of a poor diet.
Cloud Institute for Sustainability Education
The Cloud Institute works to ensure the viability of sustainable communities by leveraging changes in K-12 school systems to prepare young people for the shift toward a sustainable future. Like us, they believe that education can powerfully influence beliefs, attitudes, values and behaviors related to sustainability. Jaime Cloud, the organization’s director, has been a dedicated supporter and an inspirational professional ally. We continue to explore ways to help further their excellent work.
Dr. Katz & the Turn The Tide Foundation
Dr. David Katz MD, MPH, FACPM, FACP is an internationally renowned authority on nutrition, weight management, and the prevention of chronic disease, and an internationally recognized leader in integrative medicine and patient-centered care.
Katz is the Director and founder (1998) of Yale University's Prevention Research Center; Director and founder of the Integrative Medicine Center at Griffin Hospital (2000) in Derby, CT; founder and president of the non-profit Turn the Tide Foundation; and formerly the Director of Medical Studies in Public Health at the Yale School of Medicine for eight years. In 2007 he launched the Turn the Tide Foundation to develop and evaluate creative, practical strategies for empowering individuals and families to achieve optimal nutrition. We are working with Dr. Katz and the Turn the Tide Foundation to develop a youth health ambassador program to prepare FoodFight graduates to deliver Dr. Katz’ nutrition detectives curriculum to elementary school students. Turn the Tide Foundation, Inc. was founded in 2007 to address America’s troubling health trends – rapidly rising rates of obesity and diabetes in both the adults and children, and increasing rates of heart disease and other chronic diseases in adults.
