Challenge of the Month: January

January Challenge: Get Moving!

The most popular New Year’s Resolutions are related to exercise: staying fit, healthy and losing weight. That means there is a pretty good chance it is also your resolution! So, this months challenge is an ode to exercise.

Exercise may be the closest thing to the fountain of youth. Not only does regular activity strengthen your muscles and improve heart and lung function, but it can also reduce your risk of major diseases, stimulate the growth of new brain cells, and even add years to your life. Studies show just 30 minutes of physical activity on most days is all that’s required to reap big benefits. Here are some tips to help you get moving and stay moving:

- Scope out Groupon and Living Social for deals to local fitness classes and gyms.

- No time for the gym? Try Chair Yoga! It’s a great way to relieve stress and boost your energy during the school day.

- Instead of grabbing a meal to catch up with a friend, take a walk together.

- Get off the subway or bus one stop earlier and walk.

- Use YouTube and online resources such as Zumba, Hoopnotica, BeFit, Blogilates and Yogasync.

- To keep you on track, check out stickK, an app that lets you set goals, set stakes, invite supporters and start committing.
