Pre-breezy laptop wrap-up

Everyone seems to be posting their laptop success/failure story, so I can't stay behind ;)

I got a HP-NW8240 to test from Canonical. Lots of things don't work yet for breezy though:

The default "ati" display driver won't give me a stable image on 1920x1200 (the native LCD resolution). It's all jumping/moving around.
Because of this (the fglrx driver does work), it's impossible to switch back to the text console from X (bug in fglrx). Also, resuming from sleep nicely doesn't work, probably because of the same (or a related) bug.

The rest of the laptop (hotkeys, docking station, even the LED in the mute button!) seems to work perfectly.

I had strange problems with the free ati driver on LCD screens, as well. The solution, for me, was to turn on DDC.

With this I have working 3D and xvideo support, something I could never get working with fglrx.

Note: You shouldn't have to specify any refresh rates for your Monitor section with this.

If this works for you as well then maybe they can turn on DDC mode by default in breezy?

Yes,

HP laptops rock with ubuntu. With hoary the ati drivers (free and proprietaty) work fine and the machine hibernate fine. With breezy, mmm, hibernate is pretty broken. Let's hope it get fixed before the release thursday ...

Try editing /etc/default/acpi-support and enabling DOUBLE_CONSOLE_SWITCH.

is dat niet vet klote als je scherm niet goed werkt op de optimale resolutie? Tenminste mijn ervaring met TFT's is dat ze niet echt hip zijn tenzij ze op max ingesteld zijn.
